Pivotal authoritarian regimes have adapted and modernized their repressive methods and are undermining democracy in updated, sophisticated, and well funded ways. The result is a disruptive and serious new challenge to the emergence of an international system based on the rule of law, human rights, and open expression.

Freedom House at the UN Human Rights Council

Freedom House brought 25 human rights activists from Zimbabwe, Cuba, Egypt and Venezuela to the 10th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council March 9-13 in Geneva. There they met with representatives from more than a dozen country missions, as well as with United Nations special rapporteurs and working groups. In three separarte panel discussions organized by Freedom House, the activists urged the Council to do more to support democracy and human rights advocates who face an unprecedented assault from governments that are intent on preventing citizens from holding them accountable..

Worst of the Worst 2009 report released in Geneva

Freedom House has released its annual Worst of the Worst report, an assessment of the world's most serious human rights abusers. The release was made at the UN Human Rights Council's 10th session in Geneva. This report focuses on states and territories that have seen some of the world's most severe repression and most systematic and brutal violations of human dignity. It seeks to focus the attention of the United Nations Human Rights Council on states and territories that deserve investigation and condemnation for their widespread violations.
