International Human Rights Day: Protecting Human Rights on the net
The inaugural edition of Viewpoint by the Council of Europe addresses the mounting problems of Human Rights threats on the internet. As Kristian Bartholin, one of the brains behind the Council of Europe's Cybercrime Convention said during the show, "Freedom of expression is the basic value for a liberal democratic society". Violations of this fundamental right are rife on the internet, with certain countries blocking entire websites, censoring content and even blocking access to certain domain names.
But this is not all: as sexual exploitation and abuse of children become recurrent topics in daily news across the world, is enough being done by governments and industry actors in this field to protect children from the threats of online grooming and child abuse images? And can this protection in any way be seen as an attempt to curb freedom of expression on the internet?
